One of Series of Stories About Anti-Japanese --- civilian resistance(2)

When I was a child, I visited relatives in the neighboring village. In the whole village there were only simple houses made of stones, which formed a sharp contrast with the houses in the surrounding large villages. Before the Liberation, in a village with more than 400 households, there were always one or two large houses. The owner was often called “landlord”. His house was built like a quadrangle in old Beijing. My mother said that there used to be big houses in the village of my relatives , and it was the kind in which a large drama team could set up a stage to perform! In that era without the TV and the Internet, folk drama became the best way for people to entertain. If there was an opera in a village, the surrounding villagers also come to watch. It can be imagined that the big house in which a stage could be built was big enough.
Unfortunately, such a big house, including other houses in the village, was destroyed in a arson by Japs. In the era of Japanese devils, people lived a really hard life and their lives were hanging on the line. Two or three Japs with guns could make one or several villages restless, and people fled into the mountains hastily.
There were always angry young people who were not afraid of things and dared to do things. One day, several young strong people ambushed on the roadside where the Japs had to go before into the village and gave them a sudden attack. The short Japs were at a disadvantage in close combat and were finally killed!
The next day, a large group of Japs surrounded the whole village, but fortunately, the villagers had long been hiding away. The ferocious Japs burned the whole village to the ground.
In the next few years, wars continued on our land, and the villagers had a hard time. They could only build simple houses with stones to shelter themselves from the wind and rain. When I went back to my hometown a few years ago, I saw that most of the old dilapidated stone houses had become three-story villa houses. It was during the slack agricultural time so most of the villagers were playing cards, playing for small stakes just for amusement. I also participated in a few, for amusement! Perhaps this is the life that ordinary people in war times dreamed of.
